Just Loomis wuchs in Reno, Nevada auf und begann bereits in den 1970er Jahren auf den Straßen seiner Heimatstadt zu fotografieren. Er schloss sein Studium am Art Center College of Design in Pasadena ab, wo er Helmut Newton begegnete und dessen Assistent wurde. Es war der Beginn einer prägenden Beziehung – nicht nur einer fotografischen Lehrzeit, sondern einer lebenslangen Verbindung, die sein Werk bis heute durchzieht.
Nach seiner Zeit als Assistent lebte Loomis in Mailand, wo er durch Carla Sozzani erste Erfahrungen in der Modefotografie sammelte, bevor er nach New York zog und als regelmäßiger Beitragsfotograf für Harper’s Bazaar arbeitete. Das Albumcover für a-ha’s „Hunting High and Low“ wurde für einen Grammy Award nominiert.
Doch was Loomis am stärksten antreibt, ist nicht die Modefotografie – sondern das dokumentarische Porträt. Sein Buch „As We Are“, erschienen 2010 bei Hatje Cantz, wurde für den Deutschen Fotobuchpreis nominiert und von den Magazinen Communication Arts und PDN zum Fotobuch des Jahres gekürt. Sein Buch „Backstage“ – eine fotografische Dokumentation des legendären Berliner Volkstheaters unter Frank Castorf – erhielt den First Place Photography Prize beim New York Bookshow 2019 und wurde in der Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin ausgestellt.
2009 konzipierte June Newton eine Hommage an Helmut Newton in der Helmut Newton Foundation Berlin, die die Werke der drei Fotografen vereinte, die Newton in Los Angeles in den 1980er Jahren als Assistenten begleiteten: Mark Arbeit, Just Loomis und George Holz. Just Loomis war mit dieser Ausstellung „Three Boys from Pasadena“ auch auf der Art Cologne 2012 vertreten und zeigte seine Werke bei Kaune Contemporary in Köln.

Just Loomis grew up in Reno, Nevada, and began photographing on the streets of his hometown in the 1970s. It was the beginning of a formative relationship – not merely a photographic apprenticeship, but a lifelong connection that runs through his work to this day.
After his time as an assistant, Loomis lived in Milan, where through Carla Sozzani he gained his first experience in fashion photography, before moving to New York and becoming a regular contributor to Harper’s Bazaar. His album cover for a-ha’s „Hunting High and Low“ was nominated for a Grammy Award.
Yet what drives Loomis most deeply is not fashion photography – but documentary portraiture. Just Loomis presented this exhibition „Three Boys from Pasadena“ also at Art Cologne 2012 and showed his works at Kaune Contemporary in Cologne.
