George Holz wurde 1956 in Oak Ridge, Tennessee geboren und schloss sein Studium am Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Kalifornien ab. Noch während seiner Ausbildung begann er als Assistent von Helmut Newton zu arbeiten – eine Zusammenarbeit, die seine fotografische Haltung bis heute prägt. Als junger Fotograf lebte er in Mailand und Paris, bevor er sein Studio in New York eröffnete und zur festen Größe der amerikanischen und europäischen Fotoszene wurde.
Newton selbst war für Holz mehr als ein Lehrmeister. Er beschreibt ihn als seinen „fotografischen Vater“ – jemanden, von dem er nicht in erster Linie Technik, sondern Haltung gelernt hat: wie man mit Modellen umgeht, wie man kreativ mit Situationen umgeht, wie man ein Bild nicht nur macht, sondern erschafft. Diese Prägung ist in jedem seiner Werke spürbar.
Sein Werk spannt einen weiten Bogen: Mode und Beauty für Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar und Vanity Fair, Werbekampagnen für internationale Luxusmarken, ikonische Albumcover und Filmplakate – und daneben ein eigenständiges Fine-Art-Werk, das insbesondere durch seine Aktfotografie und Porträts internationale Beachtung gefunden hat. Für seine Arbeiten wurde er mit dem Grammy und dem Clio Award ausgezeichnet. Seine Monografie „Holz Hollywood: 30 Years of Portraits“ vereint drei Jahrzehnte Porträtfotografie der bekanntesten Persönlichkeiten aus Film, Musik, Sport und Politik.

George Holz was born in 1956 in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and graduated from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. While still a student, he began assisting Helmut Newton – a collaboration that has shaped his photographic sensibility to this day. As a young photographer he lived in Milan and Paris before establishing his studio in New York and becoming a defining presence in both American and European photography.
Newton was more than a mentor to Holz. He describes him as his „photography father“ – someone from whom he learned not primarily technique, but attitude: how to work with models, how to respond creatively to a situation, how to not merely take a picture but create one. That influence is felt in every work he makes.
His output spans a wide range: fashion and beauty for Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and Vanity Fair, advertising campaigns for international luxury brands, iconic album covers and film posters – alongside an independent fine art practice that has drawn international recognition, particularly for his nude photography and portraiture. He has received both a Grammy and a Clio Award for his work. His monograph „Holz Hollywood: 30 Years of Portraits“ brings together three decades of portrait photography of the most celebrated figures in film, music, sport and politics.
