Jo Fober
Der Fotograf Jo Fober bereist seit zwei Jahrzehnten, zumeist im Auftrag einschlägiger Medien, die Metropolen dieser Welt. Im Fokus stehen visuell relevante, das jeweilige Stadtbild prägende Gebäude, urbane Landschaften und besondere Machwerke der Innenarchitektur. Fobers Architektur- und Landschaftsaufnahmen erhalten Ihre Identität durch starke Farbreduzierung und intensiven Kontraste. Eine, insbesondere für Bildbände und Magazinstrecken, gewünschte homogene Wiedergabe unterschiedlicher Situationen eines Stadtbildes. Seine Arbeiten von sowohl Innen- als auch Außenräume, entstehen ausschließlich unter Nutzung des vorherrschenden natürlichen Lichts. Ein weiteres Merkmal seiner Metropolendokumentationen sind die jeweils gewählten Zeiträume, in denen sich im Idealfall keine Menschen im Bild aufhalten, was die skulpturale Leistung der Objekte in den Vordergrund stellt. Ebenso exemplarisch ist die häufig angewandte Zentralperspektive, wie man sie von Bernd & Hilla Becher und deren Schülern kennt, deren Werk Fobers fotografische Arbeit von Beginn an inspiriert haben.
„Für mich ist Fotografie eine Möglichkeit Bilder zu schaffen, die verborgene, unbemerkte Aspekte unserer Welt und deren Architektur offenbaren. Das Augen darf ruhen und ohne Ablenkung einen Ort in ungewohnt großem Sichtfeld erfahren. Die selektive Wahrnehmung des Alltags wird für einen Moment selbst bestimmter Dauer abgestellt. Wir dürfen eine Umgebung kompletter wahrnehmen.“
Bekannt geworden sind Jo Fobers Aufnahmen u.a. durch seine Tätigkeit für die monothematischen Metropolen-Ausgaben des QVEST Magazins und seinen Bildband zur Kölner Architektur „Das Gesicht einer Stadt“.
For two decades, photographer Jo Fober has traveled the world’s metropolises, mostly on assignment for the relevant media. The focus is on visually relevant buildings that shape the respective cityscape, urban landscapes and special interior design failures. Fober’s architectural and landscape photographs are given their identity through strong color reduction and intense contrasts. This homogeneous reproduction of different situations in an urban landscape is particularly desired for illustrated books and magazine series. His works of both interior and exterior spaces are created exclusively using the prevailing natural light. Another feature of his metropolitan documentations is the chosen time frame, ideally with no people in the picture, which highlights the sculptural quality of the objects. Equally exemplary is the frequent use of a central perspective, as seen in the work of Bernd & Hilla Becher and their students, whose work has inspired Fober’s photography from the outset.
“For me, photography is a way of creating images that reveal hidden, unnoticed aspects of our world and its architecture. The eye can rest and experience a place in an unusually large field of vision without distraction. The selective perception of everyday life is suspended for a moment of self-determined duration. We are allowed to perceive our surroundings more completely.”
Jo Fober’s photographs have become well known, among other things, through his work for the monothematic metropolitan editions of QVEST magazine and his illustrated book on Cologne architecture “Das Gesicht einer Stadt” (The Face of a City).
