COSIMA HAWEMANN

Cosima Hawemann studierte zunächst Deutsch, Englisch und Philosophie mit dem Ziel, Regisseurin zu werden, und arbeitete studienbegleitend als Regieassistentin an verschiedenen Theatern. Die Malerei – ihr Ausdrucksmittel seit Kindheitstagen – gewann jedoch zunehmend an Raum. Sie bewarb sich an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, wo sie bei den Professoren Jörg Immendorff und Helmut Federle studierte. Sie ist Meisterschülerin von A. R. Penck. Sie lebt und arbeitet in Köln.

Cosima Hawemann verbindet in ihren Arbeiten Fotografie mit gestischer Malerei. Ihre Themen sind Spannungsfelder – das Vage, Uneindeutige, Schwebende in den Motiven entspringt ihrem Interesse an der Wirkung unterschiedlicher Kräfte wie Abstraktion und Figürlichkeit. Fotografische Ausgangsbilder – aus Modezeitschriften, historischen Archiven oder dem privaten Bereich – werden durch Übermalung, Überzeichnung und Verdichtung in etwas Neues verwandelt.

Indem sie das Antlitz ihrer Figuren weitgehend verdeckt, stört Hawemann konventionelle Darstellungs- und Rezeptionsmechanismen. Sie verwehrt dem Betrachter den gewohnten Zugang zur Individualität der Porträtierten und lässt andere, bisher nicht gesehene Seiten erahnen. Was bleibt, ist eine Atmosphäre von präziser Mehrdeutigkeit – Bilder, die sich dem schnellen Blick entziehen und nach Betrachtung verlangen.

Cosima Hawemanns Bilder sind in vielen nationalen Institutionen sowie in internationalen privaten Sammlungen vertreten. Ihre Arbeiten wurden in Einzel- und Gruppenausstellungen in Deutschland, den Niederlanden, Südkorea und Polen gezeigt.

Cosima Hawemann initially studied German, English and Philosophy with the aim of becoming a theatre director, working as a director’s assistant at various theatres alongside her studies. Painting – her means of expression since childhood – gradually took over. She applied to the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where she studied under Professors Jörg Immendorff and Helmut Federle, and became a Meisterschülerin of A. R. Penck. She lives and works in Cologne.

Cosima Hawemann combines photography with gestural painting in her works. Her subjects are fields of tension – the vague, ambiguous and suspended in her motifs stems from her interest in the interplay of opposing forces such as abstraction and figuration. Photographic source images – from fashion magazines, historical archives or private spheres – are transformed through overpainting, redrawing and condensation into something altogether new.

By largely concealing the faces of her figures, Hawemann disrupts conventional mechanisms of representation and reception. She denies the viewer the familiar access to the individuality of those portrayed, allowing other, previously unseen aspects to emerge. What remains is an atmosphere of precise ambiguity – images that resist the quick glance and demand to be looked at.

Cosima Hawemann’s works are held in numerous national institutions as well as international private collections. Her work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions in Germany, the Netherlands, South Korea and Poland.
