Hans Georg Esch

Hans Georg Esch

For the 59th edition of Cologne’s art fair, Kaune Gallery presents a special solo exhibition of the artist Hans Georg Esch.

Curated for Art Cologne 2026, the selection brings together new, previously unseen works with key pieces from recent years.

At its centre is a premiere: the first professional aerial photograph taken inside Cologne Cathedral, shown for the first time at Art Cologne in a format of 180 × 260 cm. In this size, this work of significance in the history of photography is available worldwide in an edition of three. We are now accepting advance reservations.

Also on public view for the first time is one of the artist’s most recent works: a new photograph from New York, measuring 180 × 270 cm.

The exhibition further includes Esch’s well-known stage photograph of the Cologne Opera, which is currently attracting considerable attention in the exhibition at the Museum of Applied Arts Cologne (MAKK).

The presentation is complemented by limited black-and-white gelatin silver prints on baryta paper in cabinet format, 20 × 25 cm.

Hans Georg Esch

Hans Georg Esch’s photographs are not mere depictions of architecture. They are autonomous works with an identity of unusual strength for photography.

They are created without digital post-processing, solely from the precision of the moment: the instant when natural light, architectural form and the photographer’s compositional instinct come together and merge into the “architectural gaze” that defines his work.

This approach, refined over decades, has produced a signature style that is recognisable without a caption, whether in Chicago, Shanghai, Pompeii, New York or Cologne. An “Esch” often reveals itself to the viewer from afar.

Over more than 40 years, a body of work has grown that ranks among the defining positions in contemporary architectural photography. It was most recently brought together in the book ANTHROPOSCAPE as a monumental survey. The photograph of the interior of Cologne Cathedral shows what this work is about: a World Heritage Site visited by millions every year becomes an image no one has ever seen before.

Esch’s large formats demand two distances. From afar, the image resolves into a clear composition. Up close, it opens into a wealth of detail that the eye cannot take in all at once.
