Das Museum für Angewandte Kunst Köln zeigt vom 11. Juni bis zum 27. September 2026 eine umfassende Werkschau des Architekturfotografen Hans Georg Esch. „Der architektonische Blick · epochal – global“ ist nach der Pompeji-Ausstellung (2024) und „Böhm in Böhm“ (2025) die dritte und bisher größte Ausstellung innerhalb dieser Werkreihe – und die zweite große Museumsausstellung von Hans Georg Esch überhaupt.

Zu sehen sind rund 130 Exponate: großformatige Masterpieces und seriell angelegte Bildstrecken, kleinformatige Barytabzüge und analoge Polaroids, aktuelle Drohnenaufnahmen und Arbeiten aus über 40 Jahren fotografischer Tätigkeit. Die Bandbreite ist programmatisch: Von Pompeji bis zum Kölner Dom, vom Chrysler Building in New York bis zum neuen Flughafen Abu Dhabi, von archaischen Lehmbauten im jemenitischen Shibam bis zu den Hochhäusern Hongkongs und Pekings.

Architektur aus unterschiedlichsten Epochen und Weltregionen tritt in dieser Ausstellung in einen Dialog – epochenübergreifend, global im Radius, und durchzogen von einer fotografischen Handschrift, die Gebäude zu Ikonen macht. Gebäude, Fassadendetails, urbane Räume und Panoramen werden durch Eschs persönlichen „architektonischen Blick“ zu ikonischen Motiven – unabhängig von ihrem kulturellen oder geografischen Kontext.

Der 1964 in Neuwied geborene und in Hennef-Stadt Blankenberg ansässige Fotograf arbeitet seit über 40 Jahren gleichermaßen als Auftragsfotograf für internationale Architekturbüros wie Zaha Hadid Architects, Tadao Ando oder Christoph Ingenhoven sowie künstlerisch autonom. In den Jahren 2022 und 2023 erhielt Hans Georg Esch den im Guggenheim Museum verliehenen Architecture Photography Master Prize, 2023 wurde das Studio beim Loop Design Award als beste Company für Architekturfotografie und -film weltweit ausgezeichnet.

Die Ausstellungseröffnung findet am Mittwoch, den 10. Juni 2026 um 19 Uhr in Anwesenheit des Künstlers statt.

The Museum für Angewandte Kunst Köln (MAKK) presents a comprehensive retrospective of architectural photographer Hans Georg Esch from June 11 to September 27, 2026. „The Architectural Gaze · epochal – global“ is the third and most ambitious exhibition within this series – following „Pompeii“ (2024) and „Böhm in Böhm“ (2025) – and the second major museum exhibition of Hans Georg Esch overall.

On view are approximately 130 works: large-scale masterpieces and serialised image sequences, small-format baryta prints and analogue Polaroids, current drone photographs and works spanning over 40 years of photographic practice. The breadth is programmatic: from Pompeii to Cologne Cathedral, from the Chrysler Building in New York to the new airport in Abu Dhabi, from the ancient mud-brick architecture of Shibam in Yemen to the high-rises of Hong Kong and Beijing.

Architecture from vastly different eras and regions of the world enters into dialogue in this exhibition – spanning epochs, global in reach, and permeated by a photographic signature that transforms buildings into icons. Structures, facade details, urban spaces and panoramas become iconic motifs through Esch’s personal „architectural gaze“ – independent of their cultural or geographical context.

Born in Neuwied in 1964 and based in Hennef-Stadt Blankenberg, the photographer has worked for over 40 years both as a commissioned photographer for international architectural firms such as Zaha Hadid Architects, Tadao Ando and Christoph Ingenhoven, and as an autonomous artist. In 2022 and 2023, Hans Georg Esch received the Architecture Photography Master Prize, awarded at the Guggenheim Museum. In 2023, his studio was recognised at the Loop Design Award as the world’s best company in architectural photography and film.

The opening will take place on Wednesday, June 10, 2026 at 7 PM in the presence of the artist.
